Great TV Dads

My dad’s birthday is coming up next week, and he’s the best dad a girl could ask for her. In his honor, I’d like to shine a spotlight on some of the most awesome dads in TV history. No one’s as cool as he is, but these guys give him a run for his money.

Keith Mars

What girl wouldn’t want to have a badass private detective for a dad? Not only was Keith Mars great at his job, he was fine with teaching his teenage daughter the ins and outs of the family business on Veronica Mars. Veronica could wield a taser like a pro, and take down big bad criminals all by her tiny little self. Keith still took care of her, and worried like any dad, but he provided his daughter with the tools to fend for herself. That’s good parenting.

Cliff Huxtable

The Cosby Show had one of TV’s best all-time families, because it depicted such a great relationship between parents and kids. Cliff was never afraid to talk directly to his kids about serious issues, but he was also the kind of dad that could have fun. He could even teach a lesson and play a prank at the same time! Also, anyone with such glorious sweaters has to be an amazing parent.

Phillip Banks

Sure he seemed rather stern and taciturn. But when Will Smith’s life got flipped turned upside-down, and he got sent to live with his auntie and uncle on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Mr. Banks took Will in like he was one of his own. Sometimes someone cares so much about your welfare, they can be a great parent, even without being your biological one.

Richard Castle

There are few single dads on TV, and even fewer who are the primary guardians of their kids by choice, and not through being tragically widowed or something. Even though the Castle patriarch is in a state of arrested development himself, he’s still the more mature parent, and stepped up to raise his daughter solo. He has to be doing something right to have raised such a mature and level-headed teenager.

Chris Brinkley

Will Arnett’s character on Up All Night subverts gender stereotypes by giving up a high-paying corporate job to stay at home with his new baby. So already, he’s a great feminist role model. But what’s even better, is how much he embraces the role. He’s not resentful, or out cruising for affairs with the stay-at-home moms, which are things a lesser character on a lesser show might do. Whether it’s making sure his daughter’s laundry is perfectly folded, or ensuring that she fits into her playgroup, he’s serious about being the best stay-at-home parent he can be.

Okay, so technically (except for a preview episode) Touch isn’t even on the air yet. But I have high hopes for Kiefer Sutherland’s character! He’s a single dad to a mute and profoundly autistic son. He works long hours to be able to send his kid to expensive schools, and when that fails, he attempts to use numbers to communicate with his son on the only level he can.
